Week 6 (KET 120044)

For this week, we learned about the skills to start a business.

Basically, the skills needed to start a business and to keep the business running efficiently are:

  • identify resources required to start a business
  • know the techniques of effective negotiation
  • the methods of effective communication.

There are many aspects which we need to take into consideration when we start a business. These elements include Business Capital, Product or Service,  Business Location and Business Facilities.

Throughout the lesson, there was one thing that was emphasized repeatedly and that is “Communication Skills” or more importantly “Negotiation Skills”. In every business, the ability to talk fluently and be able to convince others is essential.
I learned that one must be presentable when conducting a negotiation. This includes wearing the appropriate attire and making sure that you are clean and presentable.
Preparations of Negotiation are important if you want to make the best deal .Make a clear objective of what you want out of the negotiation and how you are going to achieve that goal.
Other factors include Negotiation process, Negotiation Strategies and Negotiation Tactics. All these are needed to produce a “win-win” situation for both negotiation parties.

Negotiations are an important part of every business thus it is vital that we learn and acquire the skill to step into the field of business.

Week 5 (KET120040)

Week 5 !!

Things that I have learnt from this week lecture:

In week 5 lesson, I have learnt about the business opportunities. Internet networking is a powerful tools to run business. Most of the problems faced can be overcome with the proper use of networking. The situations that contributes to business opportunities are human needs and current products are unable to meet the demands of customers nowadays.

Besides, there are also processes of identifying the business opportunities:
1. We can do an analysis on our surroundings and understand customer needs.
2. We must understand our personal strengths and abilities.
3. We must pick a choice and come out with a business framework.

BEP=FC/(SP-VC)

BEP(abbrev. for Break Even Point)
FC(abbrev. for Fixed Cost)
SP(abbrev. for Selling Price)
VC(abbrev. for Variable Cost)

How do I feel about the things that I've learnt from this week's lecture?
I am aware that opportunities are important in starting a successful business. Always be alert and keen to grab any potential chances if we want to success in our business.

How am I going to apply the knowledge that I've gained?
I will try to consider more aspects when I want to start a business in order to prevent it from failure.

WEEK 5 (BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES)

"Our success has really been based on partnerships from the very beginning."
- Bill Gates-
This week we have learnt about Business Opportunities.
For business, opportunities come when:
1.Customers requiring new products/services solving their problems or needs.
2.Existing products/services not able to solve problems or fulfill their needs.

To be able to compete in business, we will need to grab all these opportunities. To do so, we need to:
1) Identify Strengths
2) Minimizing weaknesses
3) Using opportunities
4) Lessening threats.

Factors that affect business opportunities:
1.Demographic Change
2. Psychographic Change
3.Import & export data regarding demand & supply of products/services in market & identifying opportunities.
4.Provision of local & technological sources.
5.Relationship between industries.
6.Private & govt. projects.
7.Laws & procedures of local govt.
8.Social responsibilities & problems – jobs & eliminating crime rates.

Week 5 (KET 120044)

For week 5, the topic was Business Opportunities. Here are some of the things that I've learned.

There are 2 different situations that can create business opportunities. They are:
1. Customers require new products/services to solve their problems or needs. In other words, we need to look at the customers' needs. From there, we can know what the customers are looking for and we can come up with creative ideas to solve the problems. This creates a business opportunity for us.
2. Existing products/services are not able to solve problems or fulfill their needs. This creates a business opportunity for us in that we can come up with products/services that can or are able to solve customers' problems. We can come up with products/services that can replace those that are not fulfilling the needs of the customers. In other words, we need to look at the gap in the market.

We can manipulate the opportunities by:
1. Identifying Strengths.
2. Minimizing Weaknesses
3. Using Opportunities.
4. Lessening Threats.

As an entrepreneur, we need to have the skills to identify and choose business opportunities as well as reduce risk. We also need to consider other factors such as:
  • Demographic change.
  • Psychographic change.
  • Import and Export data regarding demand and supply of product/services in market and identifying opportunities.
  • Availability of natural resources and technology.
  • Relationship between industries.
  • Private and government projects.
  • Laws and procedures of local government.
  • Social responsibility and problems.
  • Information technology and communication.
  • Globalisation.
  • E-commerce.
Besides that, I also learned about the Break Even Point.

BEP = FC/(SP-VC)
FC = Fixed Cost
SP = Selling Price
VC = Variable Cost

In short, I have learned many new things regarding business. As a future entrepreneur, we must first acquire the skills and knowledge required in order to kick start our business. I think that the knowledge and infos learned in this class will well benefit me in the future.

A creative entrepreneur has some positive features, there are five main ways to be creative or innovative ideas. Ideas can be generated either through brainstorming, analogy (to connect two different ideas), implementation (to identify potential problems), mind mapping or rated groupings. There are four main types of innovation, namely, invention, expansion, replication and integration. At the end of the presentation, impede creativity and inspire creativity method can also be.
Already know that creativity and innovation is a key to successful entrepreneur. However, by attending this course, I have been taught to generate creative ideas (I have not been exposed to before). Creativity is  not only limited to business areas, but it applies to our lives in many ways.
An entrepreneur should not be satisfied with his achievements. He should be creative and innovative in order to remain competitive. A competent entrepreneur will be able to stand out from the other and boasting the local economy.

WEEK 4

Follow your gut instincts. The best decisions are those we don’t make"
- Donald Trump

This week, we have learnt about being creative and innovative in business.
The things that we learnt are basically about:
1) Use thinking skills innovatively & exploit ideas to develop concrete business planning.

2) Viewing the environment in a topsy turvy way & approach problems as realised business opportunities.

We also learnt about the importance of discussion/brainstorming in business with partners. It is very important as:
1.The more ideas the better.
2.Accept all ideas even if ideas seem illogical.
3.Use other  groups’ ideas.
4.Criticisms or evaluations are not allowed.

The strategies to being creative and innovative:

Week 4 (KET 120044)

From the lecture of week 4, I have learnt several aspects about creativity and innovation in business. Generally, creativity is about coming up with fresh new ideas with potential, while innovation is about making the idea a reality or a feasible, working business plan. In cultivating creativity, basically there are four phases involved:
  • Assimilation of knowledge
  • Incubator
  • Idea
  • Assessment and implementation
But how can we develop our creativity and let our creative juice flow freely? There are 5 steps for this:
  1. Brainstorming
  2. Forced analogy
  3. Implementation
  4. Mind map
  5. Normal grouping
Being creative alone is definitely not enough. At the same time, we should also be innovative to be able to create good business plans. These are the types of innovation:
  1. Invention
  2. Expansion
  3. Duplication
  4. Integration

Creativity is one of the key to success in business. It makes things exciting and fascinating, creating products that are relevant and attractive, especially for the youngsters. The important attributes of a creative person are comfortable with failures, have perseverance, able to learn from mistakes, dare to try new ideas and take risks.

In short, I had learnt on how to be creative and I think it would help me in some ways. Thank you.

Week 3 (KET120040)

Week 3 !!

Throughout the lecture last few weeks, I have been exposed to the knowledge-based entrepreneurship. In particular, I have learned that there are many factors that may contribute to the ability of entrepreneurs. For example, a competent entrepreneur should seize any opportunity to take measures to study the business before the planning system, to high-quality products and services, is committed to their business, and can effectively solve the problem. There are nine blocks of the business model, that key partners, key activities, key resources, value proposition, customer relations, customer segmentation, customer channels, cost structure and revenue streams. We can also use this to start our business. An entrepreneur will only be respected if he has good behavior his business. For instance, he should have been set in accordance with the rules and regulations, honest advertising and weighed, to avoid unnecessary waste, a good way to treat workers, take care of the environment. He should not be involved in hoarding or apply excessive customer.
Entrepreneurial knowledge in our lives is actually very important, because we can not separate themselves from commercial activities. This knowledge is dynamic and can follow our lives. In this era of globalization, there are thousands of opportunities to be explored. Through this course apply the knowledge, we are able to turn these opportunities into business. An entrepreneur in a country's development is very important because he provides jobs and drive the economy of the country.
Can I use I learned so far in many aspects of knowledge. Obviously, there are many standards, which make up a successful entrepreneur. This is not an easy task, to establish their own businesses. There are many factors to consider. We must carefully plan and systems to reduce losses. In addition, entrepreneurs should also be reflected in a good way.

Week 3 is all about ETHICS (KEE120019)

In the previous lesson, we get to know about all the entrepreneurial abilities that we should have in order to start a business. But it's not all! So, in this week we continued the class with entrepreneur ethics.

We define the concept of entrepreneurship in the Eyes of Islam. Warnings are given against hoarding. Destruction of over-supplies is strongly prohibited. We must not waste and destroy. We do not conduct a business because of it's interest. All employees must be fair to all their workers. Provides your workers with welfare, wages and comfortable workplace. Conduct business, however must not neglect to care about the environment.

Be an ethical businessman or woman!

LAM MIN ZEE (KEE120019)

Week 3

The third week of class is about Entrepreneurial Ethics

How is Entrepreneurship in the Eyes of Islam ?

Doing manufacturing or service business is to seek for legal providence. And these people hold a special position in Islam. For example, the Prophet is a businessman who is trustworthy and of high integrity.

(The Divine Acceptance Concept)
9 out of 10 providence comes from business.
And at least 1 Muslim must do business in the community or otherwise the whole community is taken blame.

1. Against Hoarding in business !
2. No Over-supplies
3. Prohibits interests
-For example, Bank Islam did not charge interests on loans borrowed.
4. Fair to workers
-Fair and responsible to workers, eg: welfare, wages, comfortable workplace
5. Responsible to the Environment care
-Besides profit maximization, nature should be preserved and not destroyed.

3rd week(7/3)

It's already week 3 but it was only my second time attending this class. It's quite a good thing that the class is conducted in English (which supposed to be in Malay, I guess) because I believe university students now are more adapted to English language in class.

Besides the jokes told by lecturer, i learnt quite a lot of things about entrepreneurship.

I was taught about the Nine Building Blocks of Business. After some research on the web, I found out what the "9" blocks actually mean.

Customer Segments – An organization serves one or several customer segments.
Value Propositions – It seeks to solve customer problems and satisfy customer needs with value propositions.
Channels – Value propositions are delivered to customers through communication, distribution, and sales Channels.
Customer Relationships – Customer relationships are established and maintained with each customer segment.
Revenue Streams – Revenue streams result from value propositions successfully offered to customers.
Key Resources – Key resources are the assets required to offer and deliver the previously described elements…
Key Activities – …by performing a number of key activities.
Key Partnerships – Some activities are outsourced and some resources are acquired outside the enterprise.
Cost Structure – The business model elements result in the cost structure.

Another new information I learnt from the previous lecture was that Islamic bank actually doesn't charge interest for their loan. If so, then how does the bank make profit to sustain it's operation? Well, the bank earns from buying and selling private properties. Citing an example if the house which the bank owns costs RM200,000, it is sold maybe for RM250,000. I'm not sure how the bank owns the house but I know that Islamic bank forbidden 'riba', so no interest for loan.

From this beneficial activities , i have learnt  and get a better understanding of the running of a business although im just the employee of the company . Overall ,  all the character have their respective role and it is all important . Missing any single of it may cause the business to be fail . Next , i also learnt how to communicate and negotiate . Week 2 KET 120006

On that particular day, I've learnt something that is very rare to me. The reality of the business world. The lecturer did exposed us to the situations that always and will be faced by the entrepreneurs out there. Well, problems always come and it might be an obstacle for some companies to develop. Thus, for any circumstances they have to defend themselves in order to make sure that their companies have a good reputations at the end of the day. Unfortunately, this matter sometimes can't be the right solution. We also have to take the consideration of tolerance in solving the problems before it became the unsolved problems.

What do i feel?

Nice! It was just nice. We are kind of in the 'The Apprentice' reality game show that time.
Everyone has to defend themselves from being guilty on that situation. It is really challenging.

Where and how I can apply it?

HAHAHA.. seriously I don't know how to specialized where and how to apply it  because everything need this values.

Please do think first before you act. No matter how you try to defend yourselves, if it is wrong, it is still be a wrong. So, fix it by admitting and do some changes! You can make a difference.

My first APK class (week 2) KEE120019

Well, it's already week 2! but yet it's just my first APK class as I had just decided to pick up this subject in the add and drop session. The lecturer entered the lecturer hall. God bless that he is quite humorous and at least we can be more relax in this lecture. As it's the first class of mine, I am still in a quite "blur" condition.

So about what we had learnt this week. Interesting! It was all about SELF-COMPETENCY ANALYSIS to enable us to self-develop entrepreneurship abilities and exhibit attributes of entrepreneurship. This class is all about BUSINESS! :D

What are the entrepreneurial abilities that we should have?
First of all, initiative. Start a business willingly without being force by others. Search and grab every opportunities! To start a business is not so hard but it is not easy also. So, we should also be able to overcome all those obstacles that we face and put in effort to solve them. Strong-willed, determination, preserverance, vigilance and patience are the keys to solve all the problems we face. We must also remember that we must focus on QUALITY WORK. Always maintain quality operations following QSO standard. Next, no money, no business! Operation of business must be based no speed and low cost. Always up to date to latest information orientations. All problems must be solve inovatively. We must also be confident. DO NOT FEAR FAILURE. To be confident on our own product can also bring confident to our customers too.

Use power strategies:
- Legitimate power
- Reward power
- Penalty power
- Expert power
- referent power

There also some reasons which lead to failure.
-Entrepreneur or workers who are undisciplined, unethical and irresponsible.
- Business which is not well planned.
-Not serious in running a business.
-Unable to choose the correct strategy to be used in your business.
- Poor environmental scanning.

So, if I have all of these entrepreneur abilities, can I start a business now? Can't wait ><
